The Daily Echo: Prescription or Permission Slip? July 24, 2014

July 24, 2014

I love talking about health and nutrition. Today I tackle a favorite topic of mine, “Prescription or Permission Slip”? In my book, “Improve the Quality of Your Life, why live in Pain?” I spent quite a bit of the book talking about taking responsibility for your health. If you are sick, overweight, can’t sleep, have heartburn, it’s pretty much because the lousy choices you are making. This is difficult for some to take. I have had some patients tell me, “You don’t know what I have been through” or “Just because you have good genetics and I don’t you can’t tell my why I am sick”. We don’t like it when we are told that our struggles in life are because of our own choices. We want to blame someone or something for our issues. In the area of food and health it then becomes very easy to take a “pill” for our “condition”. As one of my patients said a while ago, “I don’t have heartburn anymore.” I said that is great, it sounds like you are eating much better, drinking water instead of coffee, coke or booze. Then the response, No not at all I don’t have to change anything I just take this prescription and it’s gone.” Are we this stupid to think that pill x or y is “fixing” the problem?
